Details on some of IFW 2022 activities:
1. Technical visit at Montréal: The technical visit on Sunday, June 12 is an industrial visit to various companies and organizations working in the field of entotechnology or entomology in the Quebec metropolis: Montreal. Delegates will be able to board the bus either from Quebec City (7:00 am) or Montreal (9:30 am). On the program: La Centrale Agricole, TriCycle Inc., the Montreal Botanical Garden, the Biodiversity Center of the Université de Montréal, the Robert-Ouelette entomological collection as well as the Marie-Victorin herbarium. 2. Speed dating activity: To facilitate introductions and exchanges, this activity invites you to present your work and learn of another's in 5 minutes. We invite compagnies and industrial to participate, as corporate representatives will be matched with academics, an amusing way to establish first contact and identify opportunities. Students and researchers may also be paired, an occasion to recruit and find graduates studies projects. 3. OECD Workshop to establish standard methodologies for R&D: The proposed workshop seeks to address key issues facing an emerging sector within the agri-food industry, a novel approach for waste bioprocessing that is in line with a growing global transition to a reduced pollution, resource-efficient and lower carbon economy. Indeed, this sector has implications related to critical global environmental issues including greenhouse gas emissions, climate change, those related to food insecurity. In parallel with the requirement for sustainable intensification of food production, the challenges related to food waste need to be adequately addressed, given the negative environmental impact on water, land, energy and other natural resources. Waste organic bioprocessing using insects is a viable alternative to composting and biomethanisation. The successful demonstration of this process to various stakeholders (organic waste generators along the agri-food value chain, regulators involved in managing organic wastes, consumers (animal feed producers), various levels/departments of government) will increase opportunities for adoption of the production and use of insect products within the agrifood industry. This rapidly-evolving sector suffers from a lack of standards for research and development, resulting in unnecessary variability of results and an inability to compare data between studies. This significantly impedes technical progress but also negatively impacts the establishment of rational policies and regulations required to assist this nascent sector. The proposed workshop seeks to establish guidelines in order to standardise research methodologies. It is expected that the harmonisation of fundamental research procedures will assist the sector to evolve in a more coordinated manner and contribute to coherent development of related policies and regulations. 4. Health & biosecurity workshop: The health and biosecurity workshop is a special event of 2.5 hours open to both international scientific delegates and local insect farmers. This event will tackle both insect and worker health in insect farms and cover themes like occupational health hazards, pest management, dietary supplements to improve insect firness, entomopathology diagnosis and will draw inspiration from the tools developed over the longer history of veterinary medicine and beekeeping. After each presentation, discussions with the audience will allow interaction between scientists and practitioners, help to understand data gaps and innovation at an international level. This workshop hosted by Louise Hénault-Ethier, Étienne Normandin, Marie-Odile Biancamano-Benoit and Annette Bruun Jensen will welcome both guest speakers and registered presenters and allow to embrace the rapid evolution of health and biosecurity issues in the edible insect sector.
5. Eating Insect North: Eating Insect North is a special activity for the public that will be held at the Grand Marché de Québec, a unique food market highlighting local products. An amazing opportunity to discover local delicacies and innovative insect products. This activity will feature celebrity chef and insect ambassador, Joseph Yoon (www.brooklynbugs.com), who will provide several cooking demonstrations & tasting plates in Mycelium’s demo kitchen. In addition, there will be poster sessions, family activities, and conferences related to entotechnologies and entomophagy. Sommelier François Chartier will also be presenting several insects flavour maps based on molecular harmony to promote creativity while cooking insects (https://francoischartier.ca). Most importantly, there will be many insect companies, local and international, onsite to present their products, ranging from Protein bars, shakes, snacks, to pet food. 6. Training workshop: getting started in insect rearing on a pilot scale (Post conference event at Université Laval Friday June 17, 9 am-5 pm. The insect industry is booming but finding correct information on how to breed and rear insects is hard to come by. In this 1-day course the researchers of the insect research center of Inagro (Belgium) in collaboration with the Faculté des sciences de l’Agriculture et de l’alimentation at Université Laval will explain the do’s and don’ts in a pilot rearing facility. The day will start with a general introduction of the insect industry with an overview of an insect production facility, possible health hazards, key points of interest. In the afternoon we will zoom in on the two important species: the mealworm (Tenebrio molitor) and black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens). The lifecycle will be discussed and how to rear these species on a larger scale. The day will end with product processing after harvest. The aim of this course is that the participants will acquire the basic knowledge to start rearing insects on a small to medium scale and also have a good idea of the potential pitfalls, problems and uncertainties. - HOW WILL THE CONFERENCE WORK?
The conference will take place in Québec City at the Québec Conference Centre, and the virtual counterpart will be delivered over the Zoom platform. It will be managed by an experienced technical team. The conference platform will offer all the in-person sessions content to the virtual attendees, who will be able to use online features such as text-based chat and a Q&A box for live questions to presenters.
All presentations at the 4th Insects to Feed the World Conference must be delivered in English.
All virtual registered attendees will attend the conference events and navigate between the technical sessions by entering a virtual room via the online program (a link will be sent a few days before the event).
All onsite presentations, Plenary and Oral presentations, will be presented live from the Conference Centre as scheduled in the online conference program. Speakers will be present for their entire session to answer questions and participate in any discussions with onsite and virtual attendees.
Poster presentations will occur in person at the Conference Centre as scheduled in the conference program. The authors will also have the option to submit a 5-minute video for virtual attendees, which will be available at any time in the online conference program.
Oral virtual presentations and poster virtual presentations must be pre-recorded and will be available at any time in the online conference program. Attendees will have the option to click on the authors’ name to email any comments or questions if the author has accepted the networking option.
All registered virtual attendees can attend all technical sessions and switch from one session to another at will. Virtual participants access the session of their choice by entering a virtual Zoom room via a hyperlink in the online program.
A chairperson will moderate each session. Virtual participants will be able to use a Q&A box to ask questions during the presentations. The session’s chairperson will then select questions from people onsite and from virtual attendees, depending on the time allocated for the discussion, and will read them to the presenter, who will be able to answer verbally during the session.
All sessions will be fully recorded for post-conference streaming. All registered attendees will be able to revisit the sessions and catch up on the presentations that they have missed for up to three months after the event. We automatically assume that presenters accept that their recorded presentation will be made available to participants for post-conference streaming on the IFW 2022 Conference virtual platform.
